Google "Good to Know"

Apart from many cynical comments about it, personally I found Google's new campaign "Good to Know" as a good message to most of the Internet users. Why? Because the most population of Internet users are those who are not categorized as tech-savvy. There are many ways to keep someone safe while being online, but the way to deliver the message is somewhat an art itself.

With their plan to run the campaign both online and offline, like newspapers and billboards, I hope that more Internet users are aware about cyber-security, and act upon it to make themselves secure. Many news about security breaches already popped-out in 2011, let's start 2012 with new target to fight for security in Internest together, all stakeholders.

Even after I was thinking about my family back home, I wish that this program will soon also translated into other languages, especially Bahasa Indonesia.

Google "Search plus Your World"

Just read how Google is starting to merge their search function with Google+ tighter to improve people's experience of doing search in Mashable. Personally, this is what I've been waiting for some time, the real social integration of search so that the results are getting more relevant. Already several time I ranted how difficult it is to find relevant information nowadays through Internet because of the so called SEO techniques performed by tons of site owners.

And of course another thing is that my prediction that Google+ is not just the way Google fighting Facebook, comes to reality. It is bigger. And having presence in Google+ for those who haven't should start to put into concern.

How Can IT Fights Traffic Jam?

During stucked in the Jakarta's traffic couple days ago, I was thinking about how IT can help the local government fighting the traffic jam in which to my conscious is getting worse from the last time I visited Jakarta, end of 2010. People were hanging in the car, most of them only one person per car, suited nicely either planning to meet someone or going back home, which normally a bit far away from Jakarta's city center.

Will cloud computing, or whatever term you would use, able to help them really boost their productivity and work from anywhere and anytime without physically need to be in the same place? Will it able to lower numbers of people who need to travel a lot into the city?

Or at the end of the day it's all about culture? People's culture who socially needs to be work in a space called office and meet people a lot to perform their work?

Any thoughts?

Who Am I?

Less than a day, we will leave 2011 and move on to the next great year 2012. As one question that popped-out during my visit to Bali this year, I would love to hear from all of you about how would you like to describe me, either as a friend or as a professional colleague.

Please leave your comments below, describe who do you think Ferry Haris is, and put as well your wishes for me to improve in 2012.

Steve Jobs' Vision of The World

When you grow up you tend to get told the world is the way it is and you're life is just to live your life inside the world. Try not to bash into the walls too much. Try to have a nice family, have fun, save a little money.

That's a very limited life. Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact: Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you and you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use.

Once you learn that, you'll never be the same again.

We Are Not Here For Findings

I do believe that auditors are exist to ensure that organizations are able to mitigate the risks which may endanger their business. But then, if by any chance auditors cannot find any loophole within the controls implemented, they should acknowledge this fact, and give the organizations good words. Don't be sad or feeling failure if an audit could not found any findings, because that's not the main objectives of this job.

Big Win for Public Cloud Service?

Just stumbled upon an article which said that GM is about to move their 100thousands employees to Google Apps. When this trully happen then a big win goes to public cloud service. Of course in the era of cost cutting the non-core business, outsourcing productivity services like email, collaboration suite, etc. may be on of the most likely happen within many enterprises.

Then my question for this is: What would be the agreement between GM and Google, especially related to their data security and privacy, of course including continuity, in reflection to many highly confidential information are being transferred between employees? And then to what extend GM has been evaluating the due diligence of Google Apps before they decide to move that huge amount of accounts?
